AI Round-up: 3 September 2026

Google DeepMind introduced Gemini 3.8 Flash and 3.8 Flash Cyber, claiming gains in software engineering, agentic tasks and multi-step reasoning, while the general Flash model began rolling out to Gemini subscribers and Databricks. OpenAI said it is building automated shutdown controls for advanced AI tools, as Anthropic detailed containment incidents and new enterprise safeguards.

AI policy also moved into schools and courts: New York City imposed a one-year ban for most students, while the US government backed OpenAI in its copyright dispute with The New York Times. Elsewhere, Anthropic launched retail-agent blueprints, Perplexity open-sourced its Lily local inference engine, and Runway introduced an MCP for its developer platform.
